Mohammad Hossein Niroumand
Mohammad Hossein Niroumand was born February 18th, 1963 in Mashhad. In 1990, he got his B.A in Industrial Design from Tehran University, Faculty of Fine Arts. He got admitted as a M.A student in the same major but quit it because he wanted to pursue his career as a caricaturist, although he had started to work as a professional cartoonist with some well known newspapers and magazines of the time, such as Kayhan and Zan-e Rooz, since 1985.
After working some time in Kayhan Institue, he and his best friend Massoud Shojaee decided to found the first magazine specialized in cartoon and caricature. In 1992, the first issue of Kayhan Caricature was published with Niroumand as its editor-in-chief. Soon, Kayhan Caricature, as the only magazine dedicated to cartoon and caricature, got popular among the cartoonists and helped to establish the well known Tehran International Cartoon Biennial. Niroumand was the executive director of the First and Third Tehran Biennial in 1993and 1997. During 12 years of being the editor-in-chief of Kayahn Caricature, he published several articles on cartooning, finding and developing ideas, and idea engineering.
Niroumand gathered all his articles from Kayahan Caricature together with teaching materials from his cartooning workshops and classes, held in Tehran University Faculty of Fine Arts and Iran Broadcasting College, and published them in a book titled “Blue Elephant Helps: How-to-Hunt Ideas” in 2011. His cartoon collections were released under the name of two books “Illustrated Satire” and “Bag wearing men of Abu Ghraib”. He has also published a four-volume comic strip book named “War stories”.
Niroumand has held more than ten solo and group cartoon exhibitions. He participated in different cartoon contests and won some awards including the Special Prize from10th Yomyuri International Cartoon Contest. In 2009, Niroumand received the National Honor Award in Visual Arts.
In addition to cartoon and caricature, Niroumand has worked professionally in other areas of art such as Painting, Graphic Design, Animation, Screenwriting and Television writing. He was a jury member offour Tehran International Cartoon Biennials, the 3rd Fajr Visual Arts Festival, the 4th National Students Film Festival and the 7th Tehran International Animation Festival. He also held several official positions. Some of which are: Art Consultant to Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance (2005-2011); Director of Visual Arts Center Of Hoze Honari (2007);and Director of Youth Department in IRIB, National TV channel 2 (2003).
Mohammad H. Niroumand is currently a member of Board of Directors in Tehran Municipality Cultural and Artistic Organization, and the secretary of National Artists Evaluation Council. He is married and lives in Tehran and spends most of his time working on his new book.
